From Weeds To Whales – A New Poker TV Show Is On The Cards

18 Oct, 2010  Poker News

There is a new poker television show called “Whales” on the cards, to be created by Jenji Kohan and Matthew Salsberg, the producers of the popular TV series ‘Weeds.’ Both Kohan and Salsberg are known poker enthusiasts and are strong fans of the World Poker Tour (WPT) and the popular online poker website, PokerStars. This fact is evidenced by the references to the WPT and the PokerStars gaming site on the Weeds TV series, which is a noted and well acclaimed series that centres on a suburban mother who peddles marijuana to get some extra money for her family.
The new show called Whales will be a sort of poker comedy; the show will be the first of its kind to be released into the international poker community. “Whales” is a show that focuses on a group of young poker players who are graduates from the reputed universities of MIT and Harvard. The show follows these men and women on their poker journey which involves an attempt to win the first place prize of $10,000,000 at the World Series of poker (WSOP).
Since Weeds has been a big success in the United States, poker fans can expect to get a good television series from these two producers. However, there have been a few mixed opinions about the upcoming poker series which are based on the belief that unlike blackjack, poker is game that does not translate well on to the screen. So far, the only poker production to have disproved this belief was the popular Rounders; while other poker productions like Casino Royale, Lucky You and Deal have not really done very well for themselves, having managed to rake in a very small percentage of a viewing audience. As of now, the poker community can only wait and watch to see what this dynamic duo of Jenji Kohan and Matthew Salsbergcan produce.
