Daniel Negreanu Says Hruby’s Slowroll Is Breach Of Poker Etiquette

4 Nov, 2010  EPT

Daniel Negreanu was not in the least bit happy with Martin Hruby’s style of game play at the European Poker Tour main event table. He called Hruby out on his slowroll soon after he was eliminated from the EPT, losing his shot at the Triple Poker Crown.

“Why did you slowroll that hand? You knew that you had the nuts,” Negreanu asked Hruby. As he was leaving the table, Negreanu commented, “I shouldn’t shake your hand, it’s filthy. That’s the filthiest thing I’ve ever seen, but I’ll do it anyway.” Although said with a smile, it was obvious that Daniel Negreanu considered Martin Hruby’s behavior at the European Poker Tour main event table to be a breach of etiquette.

When asked about his slowroll, Martin Hruby appeared a bit baffled by the question and answered in a mutter that he did not. “I don’t slow-roll,” he said.

Daniel Negreanu finished the European Poker Tour in fourth place but was sportive enough to remark that he would not have won the European Poker Tour main event no matter how Hruby played his hand. Negreanu was later interviewed by the popular German poker website Hochgepokert.de in which he comments on Martin Hruby’s behavior at the EPT main event table. Here, Negreanu stated that he did not think that the Hungarian poker professional Martin Hruby had made the slowroll on purpose but believed that it had stemmed from the player’s lack of experience at being on such a large stage.

Although there is nothing in the poker regulations that disqualify Martin Hruby’s slowroll, as slow rolling is well within a player’s rights; it is not considered to be the norm when playing professional poker. Many poker players consider it to be a breach of etiquette. However, in Martin Hruby’s defense, it is extremely understandable that the player should have been a bit hesitant about putting such a big bet on the table, especially considering what was at stake.

Dwan “durrrr” Emerges Top High Stakes Winner of October

October, which made some players very rich, was very unlucky for others. The biggest loser of the month was Ilari “Ziigmund” Sahamies, who lost around $1 million to Tom “durrrr” Dwan early this October during a highly exciting pot-limit Omaha tournament. Toward the end of October, Sahamies found that he was down at least $1.5 million.

Sahamies’ loss, however, was Dwan’s gain; since he won nearly $1 million from Sahamies, Dwan turned out as the biggest winner of October. Other top winners of October are Andreas “Skjervoy” Torbergsen, Patrik Antonius, and Dan “Jungleman12” Cates, who found themselves richer by at least $500k or more.

By mid-October, Tom “durrrr” Dwan and Daniel “jungleman12” Cates were the leading players at the high-stakes tables of Full Tilt Poker, having won more than $4 million each. Jungleman12’s wins were far more impressive, considering the fact that he had played only 590 sessions in comparison to Durrrr’s 4069. Following closely was Phil Ivey, who had added a cool $3 million to his poker bankroll, having played slightly over 47,000 hands at Full Tilt Poker’s high stakes tables.

Brian Townsend and Gus Hansen of Team Full Tilt Poker, however, were not having a great time. While Hansen lost more than $3.1 million, Brian Townsend lost over $3.8 million. Hansen is one of the most active high stakes player at Full Tilt Poker, and Townsend, who was once a dominating online poker player, is now at the losing end.

The early days of October were extremely exciting, with top poker talents such as Dwan and Sahamies confronting each other. However, the latter half of October, and especially the beginning of November, was very quiet. During the last few days, only Ben “Sauce 1234” Sulsky and luckexpress10 were able to provide some excitement at the high-stakes table of Full Tilt Poker.

Daniel Negreanu Looking to Score the Poker Triple Crown at the Vienna EPT

30 Oct, 2010  EPT

Daniel Negreanu, an accomplished poker professional with World Series of Poker and World Poker Tour titles is now out to get the European Poker Tour title at the Vienna tourney. If Negreanu manages to win the EPT Vienna 2010, then this victory will win him the illustrious Poker Triple Crown award, which is a title of recognition given to players who have won titles in the World Series of Poker (WSOP), World Poker Tour (WPT) an the European Poker Tour (EPT).

This victory will be the final feather in his cap and will complete his qualification required for the Poker Triple Crown award. Currently, Daniel Negreanu has already managed to secure 4 World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelets and 2 World Poker Tour titles; all that is remiss is an EPT title. Negreanu is now in the lead in the EPT and it would appear that he is well on his way to taking home the Poker Triple Crown award this year. “My EPT history hasn’t been good. I finally got my first ever EPT cash in London, and this one is my second in a row, but I’m looking for a win here considering my chip position,” Negreanu commented.

So far, there have been only 2 poker players who have won the Poker Triple Crown award and this includes Roland de Wolfe and Gavin Griffin. If Daniel Negreanu should win the EPT, it will make him the third poker player in this league of extraordinary poker players.

Since Daniel Negreanu is currently the chip leader at the EPT Vienna 2010, he is very excited about the possible outcome. “Being chip leader is just sexy. It’s been a while since I had some luck late in tourneys and I’ve been deep quite a bit. Well, I was certainly lucky in the late stages of EPT Vienna…So while I’d like to claim that I skilled my way to the chip lead I’d be lying… but hey, I’m not complaining and I’ll take it anyway I can,” he said.

Dwyte Pilgrim And His Battle Against The Critics

Dwyte Pilgrim is a highly skilled professional poker player and is the 2010 World Poker Tour Borgata Champion. And, as a fairly new entrant in the world poker tournament scene, Pilgrim has faced a lot of skepticism from the poker community, who have doubted his ability at the green table, crediting his win more to luck than to skill.

Perhaps, this is because poker pro Dwyte Pilgrim has been under the radar for a long time and did not factor in the media spotlight until after his win.

In 2009, Dwyte Pilgrim got involved in the World Series of Poker Circuit and managed to rake in 12 cashes. He also featured in 7 final table poker games and took in a win at the main championship event which took place at Rincon. His critics did not commend him but claimed that the playing field was weak and the buy-in was small. Pilgrim also won the WSOPC Player of the Year, which also did not see critics budge in their standing.

“Somebody is always trying to tear you down and take away from your accomplishments. But if you look at what I’ve done in my first 18 months (as a pro), there’s not that many people that can match it,” said Dwyte Pilgrim.

In 2010, Dwyte Pilgrim participated in yet another WSOPC championship and made it all the way to the final table game at Robinsonville. He took in some cash-ins there and had some good scores as well. Even at this point, Pilgrim had not made any progress with his critics.

“I always feel like I’ve got something to prove…That’s why I’m playing these WPTs, to prove to all the doubters about my game. I’m just going to keep working hard on my game, keep playing these WPTs and I may even start playing a few EPTs just to show them my game over there. To prove to everyone I can hang with the big boys,” he added.

Pilgrim then took the eighth place at the $2,500 Mixed Hold’em WSOP event and thereafter the title and $700k in the WPT Borgata which was the largest poker tourney in WSOP history, which finally made his critics sit up and take notice.

“The circuit is kind of like the minor leagues and I’ve already proved myself there. But I’m going to keep playing the circuit and these WPTs, just to keep showing everybody what I got,” said Dwyte Pilgrim.

Ultimate Bet Pays Tom Dwan $300,000 in Compensation

23 Oct, 2010  Poker News

The Ultimate Bet cheating scandal which involved Russ Hamilton ended up costing many good poker players a lot of money. Tom “durrrr” Dwan was one of these players who got the short end of the stick when Russ Hamilton and his cronies used their tricks to con players.

However, Ultimate Bet which was only the means to Russ Hamilton’s end, is doing its bets to salvage the damage and compensate players who were scammed as a result of the super user scandal. As a result of this, the site will be paying out $300,000 worth of compensation money to Tom “durrrr” Dwan.

The scam was engineered by Russ Hamilton, a skilled poker player who won the 1994 World Series of Poker. When contracted to work as a consultant for the Ultimate Bet site, Hamilton hooked up with a group of people, which allowed him to win by viewing his opponents’ hole cards. In time, the whole team was in on the scam and together with Hamilton managed to cheat players at Ultimate Bet, taking in $22 million from the scam. The scam lasted for two years beginning with January 2005 until it was discovered in December 2007.

Tom “durrrr” Dwan was one of the luckier players at Ultimate Bet as he did not play as much at the site as he is now doing at Full Tilt. When made aware of the Russ Hamilton super user cheating scandal at Ultimate Bet, Dwan took it very well – possibly because he had not spent too much of his time and money in those poker rooms. “I guessed there was a 2% or 3% of some cheating going on,” he said.

Dwan was also able to recall a particular weird session at Ultimate Bet when he lost 20 buy-ins at a $50/$100 Pot Limit Omaha game to a single player. Although, Dwan is not able to recall the player’s name and claims that it is not on the list tat the site sent in, he did say that it left an impression on him: “nothing else the whole time peeked my interest about UB at all,” he said.

Ladbrokes Poker Launches Anonymous Poker Tables

28 Oct, 2010  Poker News

Online poker enthusiasts who have somehow managed to get a bad reputation over the months or years that they have been playing poker online can now play incognito at Ladbrokes Poker, one of the biggest online gaming service providers in the UK. This poker site has recently introduced Anonymous Tables for this very purpose.

Anonymous Tables, which are available along with the usual poker tables, follow the same rules, regulations, and procedures of regular poker tables. The only difference is that players are no longer identified by user names, monikers or handles. Every time a player chooses to play anonymously at the anonymous table, the site gives him/her a tag, which is generated at random, for identification purposes. The popular variant of Texas Hold’em, governed by the same rules, is played at the Anonymous Tables.

Ladbrokes Poker Head Kate MacLennan informed the media and the poker gaming world that poker players could never play anonymously in the past because of the presence of identifying user names and avatars, but now thanks to Anonymous Tables, they can play without anybody guessing their identity. This means that poker professionals can play without the danger of opponents trying to adjust to their well-known style, while new players can experiment with various gaming styles and strategies without being identified and eliminated.

Players, however, aren’t as enthusiastic about the Anonymous Tables as Ladbrokes Poker might have hoped chiefly because of the ugly bot issue that has reared its head recently. Critics have also raised questions regarding the dangers of collusion and multi accounting; but Ladbrokes Poker has assured that the monitors of the Anonymous Tables will have access to players’ real identities despite the anonymity.

Ladbrokes Poker has made a move to patent Anonymous Tables; but if they become popular, rival poker sites will start offering them too.

From Weeds To Whales – A New Poker TV Show Is On The Cards

18 Oct, 2010  Poker News

There is a new poker television show called “Whales” on the cards, to be created by Jenji Kohan and Matthew Salsberg, the producers of the popular TV series ‘Weeds.’ Both Kohan and Salsberg are known poker enthusiasts and are strong fans of the World Poker Tour (WPT) and the popular online poker website, PokerStars. This fact is evidenced by the references to the WPT and the PokerStars gaming site on the Weeds TV series, which is a noted and well acclaimed series that centres on a suburban mother who peddles marijuana to get some extra money for her family.
The new show called Whales will be a sort of poker comedy; the show will be the first of its kind to be released into the international poker community. “Whales” is a show that focuses on a group of young poker players who are graduates from the reputed universities of MIT and Harvard. The show follows these men and women on their poker journey which involves an attempt to win the first place prize of $10,000,000 at the World Series of poker (WSOP).
Since Weeds has been a big success in the United States, poker fans can expect to get a good television series from these two producers. However, there have been a few mixed opinions about the upcoming poker series which are based on the belief that unlike blackjack, poker is game that does not translate well on to the screen. So far, the only poker production to have disproved this belief was the popular Rounders; while other poker productions like Casino Royale, Lucky You and Deal have not really done very well for themselves, having managed to rake in a very small percentage of a viewing audience. As of now, the poker community can only wait and watch to see what this dynamic duo of Jenji Kohan and Matthew Salsbergcan produce.

Poker Pro Phil Ivey Throws a “Crappy” Tantrum at the Las Vegas Wynn

24 Oct, 2010  Poker Gossip

The Two Plus Two Poker Forum has a lot to say about poker pro Phil Ivey this week and none of it involves poker. According to reports on the form, Ivey apparently threw quite the tantrum at the craps table at the Las Vegas Wynn casino. He also threatened to never return to the casino and walked off.

Several posters at the Two Plus Two Poker Forum have commented on the issue and many players have claimed seeing him play there. For instance, a poster ‘Check Check Lay’ claims to have spotted Phil Ivey at a craps table in the casino. The poster also reported that Ivey and the floor supervisor the got into a heated altercation over a craps ruling that over just would not agree to.
Check Check Lay reports: “Apparently, the dice rested on the back wall and was called against Ivey. He proceded to yell that hes been playing dice for a long time and has never seen anything that ridiculous. He drops a few F Bombs and strengthens his argument by saying he will never play there ever again. He closes by looking at the supervisor and says “If you see me playing dice here again I’ll Suck your D$@K” then points to another supervisor and says “Your’s too”.

Although, not everyone believes that Ivey would say something like this over a craps ruling, other posters claim to have seen Iveyas well. Josecuervos stated that “it was around 11:00, he (Ivey) was wearing dark sweatpants, black jacket and black designer sneakers.”

Adam W, yet another poster at the forum was also at the venue and stated that he had seen the incident. “I got to play with him for about an hour and we had a huge roll netting him over 3 mill plus!! He was drunk and cool and having a blast high fiving me and others,” he said.

Seidel and Harrington to be Inducted into Poker Hall of Fame

The Poker Hall of Fame has announced Erik Seidel and Dan Harrington as the two finalists, who have been chosen to be honored at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Final Table celebrations.

The ten finalists for Poker Hall of Fame 2010 were Chris Ferguson, Jennifer Harman, Phil Ivey, Tom McEvoy, Scotty Nguyen, Barry Greenstein, Dan Harrigton, Linda Johnson, Daniel Negreanu, and Erik Seidel. They were selected because their fans voted online for them from July 1 to Aug 31, 2010.

A new system of voting was followed, according to which, each voter had to distribute 10 points among a maximum of three players of their choice. Voters had the freedom to give all the points to a single player or distribute the points among two or three players. The ten finalists were then judged by a jury of 16 Poker Hall of Fame members and a panel of 17 selected poker media members.

Erik Seidel, one of the founder members of the Full Tilt team and eight times winner of the WSOP gold bracelet, has been considered to be one of the greatest of poker players ever since he finished second in the 1988 WSOP Main Event, a tournament that was immortalized in “Rounders,” a feature film. Ever since 1992, when he obtained his first WSOP gold bracelet, he has been immensely popular. He is the first Full Tilt team member to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
